Sunbeds are a great alternative to fake tanning, used by many people to maintain a tan all year round.
Using a sunbed for the first time can be quite a daunting experience, as you aren’t sure what to expect, what kind of sunbed to use or how long you should use it for.
Here at Sunbed Hire Northern Ireland, we have a range of sunbeds available for hire which include Stand Up, Canopy and Red Light Therapy sunbeds.
Here are some tips to consider when using a sunbed for the first time:
Finding The Best Sunbed For You:
If you are using a sunbed exclusively to build and maintain a tan, the Stand Up and Canopy sunbeds are ideal. Both provide an all over, even tan and all of our sunbeds available for hire are fitted with body cooling fans to ensure a comfortable experience.
When there is not an abundance of space available, our Stand Up sunbeds are compact, or if you prefer a more relaxing tanning experience, our Canopy sunbed enables you to lie down, relax and tan in the comfort of your own home.
If your reason for using a sunbed is primarily for medical reasons, for example to help with an existing skin condition, our Red Light Therapy sunbeds promote collagen rebuilding in your skin for a rejuvenated glow whilst tanning.
How Often Should You Use a Sunbed?
When starting out with sunbed use, it is important to give your skin a chance to get used to tanning. It is important to check with a team member how often you should use a sunbed to build or maintain your tan based on your skin type to ensure you are getting the best results out of your sunbed hire, whilst also giving your skin time to rest between sessions.
It is advised that two to three sessions should be the maximum amount of time per week for sunbed use when building a tan and following this, one to two sessions per week should be sufficient in maintaining your tan.
How Long Should You Spend On a Sunbed?
If it is your first time using a sunbed, it is recommended that you start low and build upon the amount of minutes you spend tanning.
Little and often is the best approach to take when starting to build a tan to ensure you are giving your skin time to recover between sessions and aren’t over exposing your skin.
How Should You Prepare Your Skin For Your First Sunbed Session?
Before using a sunbed for the first time, it is important your skin has been prepared correctly to ensure you are getting the most out of each session.
If you use a sunbed with cosmetics such as makeup or fake tan on your skin, this can lead to an uneven tan or white spots due to the layers of product sitting on top of your skin.
In some cases, using a sunbed with cosmetic products on your skin can lead to irritation or your skin being unusually sensitive as the products react with the UV rays.
It is advised that before using a sunbed, you shower and exfoliate your skin for best results. You can also use tanning lotions or accelerators to speed up the tanning process on your skin. Here at Sunbed Hire Northern Ireland, we offer a range of tanning products which can be purchased and delivered with your sunbed hire to upgrade your tanning experience.
Eye Protection is Essential
It is important to remember that for any sunbed use, regardless of whether you are a beginner or experienced sunbed user, you wear protective eye goggles when tanning.
Failure to use protective eye goggles when tanning can result in damage to the internal and external structure of your eyes and in some cases, benign growths known as pterygium forming on your eyes.
Protective sunbed tanning goggles can be purchased and delivered with your sunbed hire.
Sunbed Aftercare For Your Skin
Once your first tanning session is complete, taking care of your skin is essential. Once you have freshened up, applying a moisturiser to your skin helps prevent your skin from drying out following exposure to UV rays. This is important to upkeep, as well moisturised skin maintains a tan better than skin which is dried out.
